Explore: Mercado San Miguel, Madrid
Along the backside of Plaza Mayor, you will find the Mercado San Miguel with its a mix of old and new, glimmering from the street. Built in 1916 as a wholesale market serving local restaurants and cafes with fresh supplies, fruits, vegetables, the market became an essential part of the neighborhood, bringing people together. Explore the Mercado.
The Market Today
In 2009, the market was re-opened, featuring an updated interior and exterior, maintaining the original feeling of an open-air market, and its iron structure but with modern touches. In its new iteration, the stalls feature tapas, snacks, and drinks, again bringing the neighborhood together. Today, the market is a fun tourist destination. The traffic ebbs and flows throughout the day, but by early evening, it can be quite packed. Typical of most cafes, it features standup bars where, after picking out a few options, you can gather with friends to share.
Over 20 stalls featuring Spanish favorites allow you to try a lot of types of tapas. We loved the burrata station, which featured so many options, we went back twice. It was fun wandering the space, checking out the different options, and trying a lot.

To avoid the crowds, we suggest stopping in before mid-day, picking up a few snacks and a bottle of wine, and heading off to a walking tour or wandering the neighborhood, enjoying the small bites along the way before finding a perfect late lunch location.
