5 Days in Naxos: A Thoughtfully Paced Itinerary You’ll Actually Enjoy

Naxos is one of Greece’s largest islands in the Cyclades, with a history, incredible beaches, and a relaxed, and surprisingly easy to get around.

• Best Time to Visit: April-June and September
• Ideal Trip Length: 5 days
• Pace Level: Relaxed to moderate
• Walking Level: mostly gentle beach strolls, but towns & village exploration will encounter uneven stone paths, and non-uniform steps. No need to rush through. 
• Best Area to Stay: Chora/Naxos, Agios Prokopolis, or Agia Anna
• Best for: Long, sunny beach days

This itinerary is built around a simpler, more enjoyable way to travel:

Mid-Day/ Arrival

• Arrive and transfer to your hotel. Most likely, a cab will be your best way to get to your hotel. 
• Check in and explore the hotel.
• Get a light snack and a drink at the hotel or a nearby spot. 

Afternoon

• Wander to the beach and take a quick swim.
• Layout and enjoy the view

Evening

• Early dinner on the beach watching the sunset
• Return to the hotel for an early night.

• Keep this day intentionally light.
• Avoid pre-booked, time-sensitive plans
• Prioritize rest after traveling to the island.

Morning/Midday/Afternoon

• Enjoy a full-day island tour by bus. Let someone else do the driving while you enjoy the sights and learn about the island with a local guide. 
• Our tour featured a ceramics shop, an old mill, and several villages. We sampled local liquor and learned about the distilling process. We had a lovely lunch in one of the villages, enjoying watching the local life under the shade. 

Early Evening

• Relaxed dinner and sunset. Honestly, it never gets old. 

• Taking a guided tour allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
• Allow time to sit, rest, and enjoy

Midday: 

• Head to Chora for a leisurely lunch
• Wander through the old market and the Venetian castle.
• Explore the side streets back to the port.

Late Afternoon

• Café break along the port road with a view of the water
• Head towards the Portera as the sun sets for a beautiful view.

Evening

• Enjoy dinner in town or head back to the hotel with takeaway.

• This is your “enjoy the moment” day.
• There are no fixed times today, so you can flow through the day at your own pace. 
• Build in time to linger.
• Return early enough to enjoy your evening
• Keep the day adaptable

Option 1: Beach Day – return to one of visits from the overview trip or hike to mount zas or a full beach day

• Explore a different beach
• Rent a beach chair & umbrella
• Enjoy a slower day with fewer plans

Option 2: Easy Day Trip

• Choose a destination from the full-day tour or take the ferry to Paros (Naxos Sister Island)
• Return to enjoy lunch and more exploration
• Prioritize ease and simplicity

Option 3: Learn More About Naxos

• Enjoy a Wine Tasting and Visit to a Local Winery
• Explore a Local Farm and Cooking Experience

• Main Naxos/Chora Area – close to the ferry, Old Market, shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. This area is convenient, but the beaches are 20 minutes away.
• Agios Prokopolis – right on the beach, more relaxed than Chora but about 20 mins from town. Nice mix of restaurants.
• Agia Anna – focus on tourists with beachfront restaurants and a walkable area.

Your Stay Strategy

• Be clear on what you want to experience
• Beach focused – Agios Prokopolis and Agia Anna are best
• Cultural and History focused – Chora is central and smart choice

• If you are making Naxos part of a larger Greece vacation, taking the ferry from another island is the easiest way to arrive. Usually under 3 hours on the ferry.
• Coming from Athens, the 45-minute flight is the best way to arrive. Limited flights and connecting cities in and out of Naxos can make connecting harder to plan.
• Once on the island, most people recommend renting a car,

• Trying to fit too much into each day
• Choosing poorly located accommodations.
• Underestimating travel time if you are bus-dependent.
• Skipping downtime or just relaxing – Naxos is the ultimate recharge island.
